2025 Toyko, Hakone, Kyoto Japan

March 24, 2025 by Erin Phillips

Arrival - day 0

  • super tired but was a cute walk from subway to hotel

  • Bought delicious sweet potato pastry

  • Got our fortune told at the shrine for 100 yen - if it’s good you keep it, if it’s bad you tie it up there and leave it

  • After checking into hotel, napped til Negina got in

  • Ate dinner at revolving sushi (45m wait) everything was self serve - from getting number, to getting seated, to ordering and paying - we all full and paid $32

  • 7/11 stop <3

  • Put on matching pjs and slept

Day 1

  • cold and overcast

  • Breakfast at hotel, snacks from 7/11

  • Love there are drink vending machines everywhere with hot and cold drinks

  • Suica card is so easy on iPhone wallet. Just fill it and scan phone

  • Subway pretty easy to figure out

  • Rode to Shibuya - walked thru the crossing. Saw famous dog statue (hachiko). Shopped at Uniqlo for Marshall to get better cold weather clothes.

  • Walked through yoyogi park and saw entrance to temple

  • Goal was b side label stickers and it was very small and cute on a really quaint shopping street (Harajuku, all things teenage culture.) Good vibes (cat street)

  • Trendy shoe store too crowded for Marshall's liking

  • Lunch at Gluten FreeTs kitchen - so tiny and cute. Very good.

  • Rode to shinjuku and saw the 3D cat, Godzilla street and then met Chris and Jen for rooftop drinks (expensive)and a killer view on 45th story

  • Finally, had to get back to asakusa for dinner reservation at Gonpachi - meat and veggie skewers

  • Walk home was very cold with chunky, wet snowfall

  • Negina bought her traditional vacation umbrella

  • Wandered a mall looking for shoes for Marshall

  • Noticed: restaurants have little baskets to put your belongings

  • Steps: 22k / 9 miles

Day 2

  • Sunny!!

  • Breakfast from 7-11/ Lawson (sold out of egg salad sammies at 7-11 so had to get one from Lawson; Negina had her first onigiri

  • Went to don Quijote (multi level store of so many things)

  • Saw long lines of dudes staring at their phones for what we thought was for a casino

  • Walked down kitchen street (kappa bashi)

  • Headed to sumida city hoping to see capybaras

  • Got super lucky and was able to go to the capybara cafe! Most of the time require booking weeks in advance

  • We needed to kill an hour so we walked around this part of town that was not touristy at all. Bought some delicious chicken from a mom and pop shop.

  • After capybaras, Tourists told us about the onigiri shrine so we popped by there

  • Took a stroll over the sumida river/sumida park

  • Popped by Imado shrine with lots of maneki neko (bekoning cats)

  • Next was lunch at tempura asakusa - which is gluten free tempura bowls that came with instructions. We had the place to ourselves - which was on the 2nd floor off a crazy busy street

  • For dessert, had candied strawberries and ninja got foam art coffee

  • Marshall tried on some platform sneakers

  • Then we tried some bad strawberry themed alcohol (tequila and sake)

  • And continued to walk around busy streets and shops

  • Stopped for an interview from a couple girls practicing their English

  • Saw a few cherry blossom trees blooming here and there

  • Saw very phallic pink and blue chocolate covered bananas

  • Popped into a wood block prints shop - owners were really sweet

  • More vending machine stops and 7-11 pop ins

  • Ended the day with lovely views from the top of our hotel around 6pm

  • We saw lots of dogs in strollers

  • 20k steps, 8.6 miles

Day 3

  • weather is clear!

  • check out. Finally got egg sando from 7-11 and was indeed delicious and better than Lawson’s

  • Took a romance car train to Hakone - saw some nice views of mt Fuji

  • Once in Hakone, we took the railway to a stop for a snack. We found an adorable cafe (Naraya Cafe) that served delicious pizza, roasted sweet potato, beer and included a hot spring foot soak! It was a highlight! 100/10 would recommend.

  • Then we stopped at the open air museum which was just delightful. The weather was sunny and perfect. We just strolled around. Highlights: the stained glass spiral staircase building, the splooting man, weeping chia head, Rainbow diamonds, squishy rock stools,

  • Time for lunch! Went to Gora brewery and this was my fav meal so far (potatoes, delicious salad, and 2 types of crudo) plus beer / yuzu drink

  • Walked through Gora park but mostly all the plants were still in hibernation + moss garden was being protected for the winter - we took the cable car to the next stop.

  • From there, took the ropeway (gondola) from Gora to black egg place. We rode over the active volcano and Sulfur smoke - then got out to go try the black eggs! They add 7 years to your life. Negina got chocolate eggs. Unclear how much time they add to life.

  • After that, we went to the final ropeway stop to catch a quick bus to our Ryokan.

  • Had about 20 mins before our traditional multi course dinner. Not much (or anything) was explained. Negina came down in traditional attire. At one point we had 30+ plates on the table.

  • Had to kill some time between end of dinner and 9pm private onsen

  • -~15k steps 6 miles

Day 4

  • Overcast / misty

  • slept on traditional beds

  • Had leisurely morning until 8:45 breakfast. It was again a full spread of little funny foods. Lots of gummies, a couple of soups, pickled items, fish

  • Time to adventure back down the mountain to get to kyoto.

  • In hindsight (Erin’s opinion) should have just gone down to the main station and walked around / shopped. However, we did close the Hakone loop by taking the pirate ship across lake Ashi

  • The bus ride back to Odawara took forever so we had to scramble to get food (from Lawson’s) to take on the high speed train to Kyoto. The high speed trains coming through the station are wild!

  • After a 2 hour ride, we checked into the Dormy Inn which I’m already in love with. We chose this franchise because I saw on Reddit that folks love it - and get it now. We have fun matching hotel clothes. There’s free ice cream at night and a free probiotic drink in the morning. You get free late night noodles. And there’s a public bath.

  • After settling in and booking massages, we walked to the Gion area (45 minutes) which is a HUGE shopping area. We found the b label sticker store here. Then had to race all the way back for our 7pm dinner reservation.

  • We had all the meats at this wagyu restaurant.

  • Another pop in at Lawson for pampering items (face mask and leg masks) before heading back for massage / bath house. I was afraid the bath house would be chaotic with tourists but it’s not the case. I was the only white girl during my time in. It was a fun thing to experience!

  • 18k steps, 7.5 miles (mostly all done in Kyoto lol)

Day 5 - 24 hours in Kyoto

  • overcast but warmer

  • Started with free probiotic drink

  • Negina had breakfast buffet

  • Erin and mosho got 7-11 food (strawberries, onigiri, part boiled egg)

  • Checked on, stored luggage, and bike tour guide picked us up

  • We drove west then rode through the natural area, away from tourists! Each mountain has a gold and a shrine/temple, and each direction of Kyoto (NSEW) has a temple

  • Stopped at the emperors mausoleum surrounded by bamboo and large cedar trees

  • Saw a fruit and veg vending machine

  • We had traditional matcha from a tea shop

  • Stopped at a plum temple where the plum celebration occurred in March, and passed the cherry blossom temple where that celebration occurs in April

  • We stopped at the golden temple - the grounds were really beautiful

  • Then we RACED back so that we wouldn’t be late for our 1:00 lunch reservation at Kacto. Our guide was so worried about us being late. We made it at about 3 mins after. Food was lovely. Biked around 16 miles?

  • The area the restaurant was in was btw the river and a canal. Super cute. We walked back to the hotel along the canal. Mosho really loved this area and wants to spend more time there if we return.

  • Mosho also wants to eat more sushi next time

  • Picked up bags and began the adventure to Osaka airport (which is on an island)

  • The line for Cebu to check bags was over an hour long (not convinced me needed to check them) and then getting through security and customs took like 3 minutes.

  • We checked out a lounge but it was pretty terrible

  • At dinner / snack at Onigiri Burger. Ninja had spam and egg, mosho had teriyaki chicken and I had tofu and egg. They were really yummy.

  • Turns out the flight is a mega huge international plane

Some fav pics that Mosho & Ninja took:

2023 Handstands in the Alps, Austria

August 13, 2023 by Erin Phillips

Day 1-2: Travel to Zurich, Check in, Dinner, Sleep

Logan & I YOLO’ed and upgraded to Business class on Lufthansa. 100% worth it. Upon arriving in Frankfurt for our connection (which we were RUSHING to) we found out our flight (along with ~20 others) was cancelled due to weather. We had to act FAST - and luckily Logan was thinking on his feet. We weren’t fast enough to get on the next flight out, but were very lucky to get on standby for the 4pm flight. That did mean no more bike tour in Zurich, but we got fully refunded.

Pro Tip: If your trip is cancelled in the EU you can complete a short form to ask for reimbursement. (Which seems to be a very generous amount)

We got checked into our BnB with the most friendly host. It was small and adorable with sweet views.

After walking around a little bit in Zurich’s winding and cobblestoned downtown, we chose a French spot for dinner.

Day 3: Breakfast in Zurich, Train to Feldkirch

Not a lot open on Sundays (esp early) in Zurich, but we found a delicious spot called Babu’s Bakery and Coffeehouse. Next up, catch the train to Feldkirch, Austria!

Meeting Sonja at the train station! We took a 20ish minute drive from the train station to our retreat house, probably at around 3500 ft elevation with views for days. Logan and I also opted to head back to Sonja & Ivo’s apartment to meet the cats, see the training space we’re so familiar with online, and help get supplies for the retreat! The space is so cute, in a converted fabric factory, with amazing views. And the cats!!! Supa!

Next, we meet the rest of the retreat guests (some known, some new!), have dinner, and relax before training begins the next morning! No wine yet, but that will change ;)

Day 4: Retreat Day 1 Handstand Basics, Lunch, more Handstands, little stroll / cows, dinner

Day 6: Retreat Day 3 - Hike + Jam

We woke up and headed our for our hike. The entire drive, it was raining. When we got our of the car, it was cold, wet and windy! We decided to head up anyway and wait it out in the restaurant - and low and behind, with the power of hot chocolate and french fries, the skies cleared and it turned into the most amazing day/hike. Dare I say, the hills WERE alive with the sound of music. And the cows!!!!

Day 7: Retreat Day 4 - Handstands, lunch, lake, Middle splits/flexibility

Day 8: Retreat Day 5 - One arm handstand, Bent arm strength (handstand to crow), Farewell party

My absolute favorite dinner of the retreat- individual, sharable homemade pizzas using the outdoor pizza oven!

Then party time! Wine, charades, learning about the vegetable called kohlrabi, and winning 2nd place in the bag game.

Day 9: Train to Munich, Germany | Beer + Food tour

When I say “train to Munich” what I really mean is 5 trains and 5 hours to Munich, lol. But we enjoyed the ride. We checked into our fancy Kings First Class hotel, and sought food - and you guessed it - more french fries!

Next chill, and get ready for our 6pm beer + dinner tour to learn all about Bavarian history and beer making.

  • Tour started with a beer

  • Visited beer hall (pretzels and 3 samples) and museum

  • Visited Hofbrau House - touristy but POPPIN’ off - just did a looksee

  • Dinner at Hackenhaus

Day 10: Day in Germany | Biking tour

Super yummy breakfast at Joon, obligatory handstands in front of the gothic central building, then bike tour with our super eclectic guide. We had a small group of 6, 3 of which lived in Austrailia, which was perfect. The weather was all over the place (hot, cold, drizzle, windy) but it worked out great! We covered a lot of ground and hit some cool points of interest. We even stopped at a beer garden for - you guessed it - beer and fries!

Lots of the architecture was influenced by Italian design.

Americahaus was a post WW2 initiative to help spread democratic ideology across Germany.

We biked by the 2nd largest beer garden in the world, located in the English gardens. And also found folks surfing in the river here!

We topped off the evening with a trip to the free NS-Dokumentationszentrum München museum.

Then Sherry had the brilliant idea to eat Thai for dinner - just across the street from our hotel. This hole in the wall did not disappoint!

Day 11: Travel to Austin

We got a good night sleep then woke early to make our way to the bus station to head to the airport. Everyone’s trips home went well! (It didn’t hurt that I upgraded to business class again cause I’m bouji and the flight was 10 hours).

Highlights:

  • All the handmade, vegetarian food made by a friend who happens to be Italian and a Chef

  • All the Sherry selfies

  • Meeting my internet friends

  • Visiting German speaking countries

  • Fresh air

  • Group photoshoot & toe touches!

  • Learning that potatoes are called “apples of the earth”

2023 The Highlands, Scotland

May 15, 2023 by Erin Phillips

Where to stay? We stayed in an AirBnB near city center

- steps from Bus station
- steps from Grocery
- steps from all the things in the city

Getting from the airport to your abode
- Download the Inverness City Taxis app and prebook your rides. You pay at the end of the ride via cash or card. There’s no Uber or Lyft. The bus system is reliable!

Money
- Card for everything except additional tips for your tour guides
- At restaurants, if you want to leave additional tip (10-15%) then you must tell them before your card is run - they won’t ask!

Meals
- Most places don't open for breakfast until 9am or 10am!
- Red sauce is ketchup
- Inverness is small and can get busy. Get reservations for dinner, esp on Fri/Sat nights

DAY 1 SETTLE

I was welcomed into Scotland by a huge seagull swooping over my shoulder and grabbing the piece of dried mango out of my hand. Our taxi picked us up and we were on our way to our Bnb.

We grabbed food and cocktails at Scotch & Rye, did a grocery store run, then nested & rested a bit. In May, the sun rises around 5am and doesn’t set until 9-10pm. It never gets fully dark!

DAY 2 EXPLORE

As you can imagine, when the sun rises at 5am, it’s pretty easy to rise early as well. My favorite thing to do on the first day(s) of a trip is to take a walking tour. But first, morning walks and breakfast!

  • Walked along River Ness to the Ness Islands

    • They experimented with planting various non native trees like Redwoods and others to see what could grow in the climate. The islands are filled with huge, old trees.

Pop into Leakey’s bookstore. The largest 2nd hand bookstore in the UK inside what used to be a church.

A stop by the oldest secular building in town, the Abertarff House - built in 1593.

2022 Santiago, Chile

December 17, 2022 by Erin Phillips

Where to stay? We stayed in the neighborhood of Providencia
- steps from Metro
- walkable
- clean/safe
- many things to do
- many high rise apartments for rent to wake up to views of the city and mountains

*The city has changed quite a bit over the past 3 years so some neighborhoods might not be as safe as they once were. Make sure your research is up to date.

Getting from the airport to your abode
- Uber isn't legal (but some still use it)
- Be wary of Taxi scams (only book official taxis from the airport)
- If you want to be super safe, book ahead of time through a service like Welcome Pickups. That is what we did and it was safe and convenient.
- Should be $30-$40 USD to get from airport to city center & about 20-45 minutes depending on traffic

Money
- Every restaurant/cafe we went to took card (and electronic card, like Apple pay)
- There is an extra fee for foreigners and sometimes the card needs to be scanned twice
- Bring cash for cheap cherries ($1 per kilo), avocados, mote, or other street purchases!

Meals
- Most places don't open for breakfast until 9am!
- Most places are CLOSED on Sundays
- Most Chileans eat a small breakfast, large lunch around 1-3pm, and either no, or a small snacky dinner

DAY 1 SETTLE

After we checked in to our apartment and nested, we headed out for a snack. If in the Provedencia area, head over to Huelen Street. There are a few cafes to choose from (as well as 2 yoga studios) This was the first time I heard Chilean Spanish in such clarity when the waiter told me they had “pecao” on the menu (fish / pescado)
For dinner, check out Peruvian food. According to one of our guides its “like Chilean food but better.” A pisco sour is a must - but trust me, just one! We went to Restaurant Pez de Oro and had 2 ceviches and a typical Peruvian layered cold dish called a causa.

Tip: Since its the first day, definitely walk to wherever you go to begin exploring your local area!

DAY 2 FAMILIARIZE

Early in your travels, it's important to learn about the history of the city and get info about the main points of interest. Tour guides are typically happy to give you further recommendations for things to do, eat, drink, etc

We booked through GuruWalk, specifically the "Essential Santiago Free Tour, Iconic Places and Recommendations" We learned a ton about how the city has changed in the past 3 years from covid, protests, presidential changes, and immigration. It was about 2.5 hours and well worth it! Don't forget to tip your guide! (Key points: Plaza de arms, La Moneda Palace, Paseo Bandera)
—> Get loaded french fries at Papachecos
—> Get typical chilean sammies at the famous Antigua Fuente
—> Head over to Cerro Santa Lucía Hill for exploration and views
—> Explore Barrio Lastarria, artsy, cute, hoppin’

DAY 3 WINE

Breakfast - Eggy Cafeteria (open on Sunday and opens at 8:30am) the most delicious (tomatoes, salad, eggs). We went so many times that Dammit Mearle needed to leave their mark. Can you spot it?

We booked a day trip to explore local wineries in the Casa Blanca Valley - we booked through AirBnB but if you can book directly through the person (via Instagram) they will make more of a cut.

After the 2 wineries, we visited the coastal city of Valparaíso, it's AMAZING! It’s the sister city to the more touristy Viña del Mar - and you def need a guide. It's a maze of streets at the top of a hill. Many hidden photo opportunities. (Reminded me of Alfama neighborhood in Lisbon)
—> Eat lunch at the local market in Valparaíso
—> Expect parking in Valparaíso to be rough
—> Expect there to be traffic to/from

Tip: We went on a Sunday and that worked out nicely since there was less traffic to and from, and places were still open. Note: Parking is not easy in Valparaíso.

Dinner suggestion: Domani Pizzeria - Napoleon style pizza off the hip street of Manuel Monte in Provendencia

DAY 4 EXPLORE

Start every day at Eggy!!
We headed east (walkable from Providencia) to the Sculpture Park Museum - a free open air park. Saw lots of interesting trees & nesting monk parakeets.
Then catch the metro to the Cementerio General - make sure to enter at the main entrance to see a map and ensure you visit the tombs and memorials you want to see. This place is HUGE. Or meander around. It's pretty incredible.

Next, head to Barrio Yungay - Many museums here (closed on Monday, only 2 offer english, one being Museum of Memory and Human Rights) and lots of old architecture and interesting street art!

An expansive park is here called Quinta Normal Park
We had lunch at Zarita—> highly recommend for vibes and good Peruvian food. We had dessert at Peluqueria Francesa (a french barber shop and restaurant) for more vibes!

DAY 5 HIKE

There are 2 trails at Aguas de Ramón Park- and we chose the shorter one (which is still 10k and about 4 hours) but is more scenic than the longer one, treks along the water, and provides incredible city views. This park is only a few KMs from the city and takes about 40 minutes to get to (due to traffic). The trail is dry in the summer, so wear shoes with good traction.
After we recovered, we headed back to Barrio Yungay to visit the Museum of Memory and Human Rights

Finally, we ended the day in Barrio Italia to explore Ave Italia. We had some of the best apps at Casaluz Restaurant. I’d explore this area more if we had more time!

DAY 6 OUTSKIRTS / UNWIND

It was our last day so we woke up, grabbed some coffee and a pastry (on Huelen again) then headed to a yoga class at Academia yoga de santiago!

Head south to the community that hosts the Museo Cielo Abierto (Street Art) - it's free and was a way to bring money and energy to this working class neighborhood. There are approximately 55 huge murals painted on the sides of the modest apartment buildings.

When we got back to the apartment, we checked out the local Providencia bar of - Bar Liguria -- we grabbed a few appetizers, a pisco sour, and relaxed before the flight!

  • Bicentenario, Vitacura Park (flamingos, east side modern architecture, views)

  • Wonderland Cafe - typical dinner snack

  • View point from the top of the

  • Huge market at Vega Central Santiago
